Back when I had just changed jobs in 2020, I carried a 2015 MacBook Pro to the Yigao Digital City on Wensan Road and sold it for 3,000 yuan. I have to say, Macs really hold their value — I bought it for seven or eight thousand, used it for four or five years, and it was still worth 3,000. Then I chipped in a bit more and put together a desktop. The specs were:
| Component | Model |
|---|---|
| CPU | AMD 3700X |
| GPU | GTX1660SUPER |
| Memory | DDR4 3200 8GB *4 |
| Storage | Samsung 256G nvme + 500G nvme |
| Motherboard | MSI B450 Mortar |
Those specs looked pretty good for the time, and it lasted me nearly six years. But lately it hasn’t felt great to use. I don’t really have any gaming needs, and running Ollama with 6GB of VRAM got me nowhere — it just sat idle. Anyway, it was getting old, so I decided to sell it. Today I threw the desktop into the trunk and drove to Yigao, and sold the machine for 1,500 yuan 🤦♀️. In its place I bought an HP Omen 11. I’d always used MacBook Pros, and I have to say that ever since M1 came out, the MacBook experience has been excellent — even running programs, the fan doesn’t spin. But when I left my job I had to hand in the company computer, leaving me with no laptop at all, so I bought one for the convenience of taking it out and about.

The experience so far is fine. Next, during this GAP period I can take this computer to the library to study. The weather is cold right now in the depths of winter, which also saves the money I’d spend running the air conditioner at home, haha.
Also, I actually want to say: with e-commerce having developed to where it is today, shopping online is already extremely poor value for money. This computer was a bit over 7,000 with the national subsidy on JD, and it was also over 7,000 with the subsidy offline — almost no difference at all. Except for Pinduoduo (where you might get an almost-new one), it’s really better to buy offline, where you can also inspect the machine on the spot. So at the same price, compared with buying online, I’d rather buy offline — at least I won’t leave a row of data behind in these e-commerce platforms’ databases.
