Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (codename Resolute Raccoon) is a new-generation LTS built around pure Wayland, Linux 7.0, GNOME 50, and a Rust-hardened stack, supported until April 2031. Below are the official key new features:

1. Core Underlying Upgrades
Linux Kernel 7.0: The first release with large-scale Rust kernel components, with major improvements in hardware support, graphics, and IO performance.
Pure Wayland desktop: Removes the X11 login session, runs legacy apps via XWayland compatibility, and enables fractional scaling/VRR by default.
APT 3.0: Faster, more stable package management, with optimized dependency resolution and parallel downloads.
systemd 259.5: Comprehensive upgrades to services, startup, and security policies.
2. Desktop Experience (GNOME 50)
A brand-new Activities Overview, smoother animations, and more efficient window management.
The default terminal is switched to Ptyxis (GTK4, frosted glass, session save).
Deep power-management optimization, with better battery life and cooling on laptops.
The first-ever official ARM64 desktop ISO, supporting more devices.
3. Security and Memory Safety (Key Focus)
TPM 2.0 full-disk encryption: Natively supported by the installer, hardware-level security.
sudo-rs by default: sudo rewritten in Rust, eliminating memory vulnerabilities, with a seamless switching experience for compatible configs.
rust-coreutils: Memory-safety hardening for the basic toolchain.
Post-quantum cryptography, CRA compliance, and FIPS/STIG/CIS hardening.
Livepatch support for Arm servers, broadening hot-patching coverage without reboots.
4. Installation and Deployment
Installation options changed to Default/Extended, replacing Minimal/Normal.
Simplified encryption flow, with TPM automatic key protection support.
Unified images for server/cloud/edge, supporting x86_64/ARM64/RISC‑V and more.
5. Major Default Application Updates
Browser: Firefox 149/150
Office: LibreOffice 25.8
Mail: Thunderbird 140
Image editing: GIMP 3.0
PDF reader: Papers (Rust+GTK4, replacing Evince)
Video player: Showtime, replacing Totem
Indexing: LocalSearch, a renamed and upgraded successor to Tracker Miners
6. AI/Cloud/Enterprise Enhancements
Native optimization for NVIDIA CUDA and AMD ROCm, so AI training/inference works out of the box.
Kernel hot-patching, 10 years of base + 5 years of ESM extended maintenance (Ubuntu Pro).
Full-stack support for containers/K8s, bare-metal MAAS, and IoT/robotics.
7. Support Lifecycle
- Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: standard support until April 2031; Ubuntu Pro can extend maintenance.
