In 2016, Zhou Jintao, former chief economist at CITIC Securities, died of illness at the age of 44. The most stunning judgment this economist—hailed as the “Sovereign of Cycles”—left to the world was: “Life’s wealth hinges on the Kondratieff wave.”
That sentence is not chicken soup; it is a hard-nosed insight based on a century of economic data. Today, let’s read Zhou Jintao’s wave-cycle theory together, and see where we stand and where we should be heading.
One: The Cycle Is Human Nature
Zhou Jintao once said something quite Zen: “The cycle is human nature.”
Economic fluctuation was never a cold game of data, but a mirror of collective human behavior—the cycle of greed and fear, the alternation of optimism and pessimism. At the peak of every cycle, human greed reaches its extreme; at the bottom of every cycle, fear spreads to the point of despair.
Understand this, and we can see: to predict the economy is, in essence, to understand human nature; to accumulate wealth is, in essence, to overcome yourself.
Two: The Kondratieff Wave—The Top-Level Design of Wealth
The Kondratieff long wave (the “Kondratieff” for short) is the skeleton of the wave-cycle theory. It is a super-cycle of 50-60 years, driven by technological revolution:
- First round: the Industrial Revolution (1780-1840)
- Second round: the steam engine and railways (1840-1890)
- Third round: electricity and heavy chemicals (1890-1940)
- Fourth round: automobiles and oil (1940-1980)
- Fifth round: information technology (1980-2025?)
- Sixth round: AI and new energy (gestating)
The essence of the Kondratieff is the whole process of a technology dividend going from germination → diffusion → exhaustion.
When a new technology is born, it first brings productivity gains, rising corporate profits, and rising asset prices. As the technology spreads, the dividend is carved up and exhausted, overcapacity appears, and the economy enters a period of adjustment. And so it repeats.
Zhou Jintao pointed out: “The point in the Kondratieff at which a person is born almost determines the economic trajectory of his whole life.”
This is not fatalism, but a reminder: in the face of the power of a great cycle, the role of individual effort is limited. Going with the trend matters more than burying your head in hard work.
Three: Four Nested Cycles—The Russian Nesting Dolls of the Economy
If you understand only the Kondratieff, it is still not enough to guide practice. Zhou Jintao broke economic fluctuation down into four layers of nested cycles:
| Cycle | Length | Core driver | Meaning for the ordinary person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kondratieff | 50-60 years | Technological revolution | Determines the ceiling of a lifetime’s wealth |
| Kuznets | 18-20 years | Real estate/urbanization | Affects the timing of property buying and selling |
| Juglar | 9-11 years | Equipment investment/capacity | Determines the corporate profit cycle |
| Kitchin | 3-4 years | Inventory fluctuation | Short-term swings in the stock market |
Key insight: great cycles constrain small cycles.
For example, in the depression phase of the Kondratieff, even a restocking rebound of the Kitchin cycle can hardly reverse the overall pattern of depressed asset prices. Just as the warmest winter sunshine cannot change the nature of the cold.
Four: The Four Phases of the Kondratieff—Where Are We?
Taking the fifth Kondratieff (the information-technology revolution) as an example, Zhou Jintao divided the 50-year great cycle into four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, winter:
Recovery phase (spring) 1982-1991
New technology germinates and the economy recovers from deflation. This is the positioning phase—commodities, stocks, and real estate stop falling and stabilize, and the bold begin to place their bets.
Prosperity phase (summer) 1991-2004
The internet goes global and the economy grows rapidly. This is the harvest phase—a full bull market in stocks, property, and commodities, with wealth accumulating fast, and also the gestation period of the bubble.
Recession phase (autumn) 2004-2015
The technology dividend is exhausted and stagflation appears. The 2008 financial crisis is the landmark turning point. This is the risk-avoidance phase—the bubble bursts, and cash and gold are king.
Depression phase (winter) 2015-2025?
The old model is cleared out and the new model gestates. This is the waiting phase—asset prices are depressed and cash is king, and it is also the best moment to position for the next round.
Where are we?
By Zhou Jintao’s judgment, after 2015 we entered the depression phase of the fifth Kondratieff. This phase will last until the new technology (AI, new energy) truly explodes. Historical experience shows that the depression phase is often the most painful but also the phase that gestates the greatest opportunities.
Five: The Theory of a Lifetime’s Wealth—Three Chances Decide Everything
This is the most stunning part of the wave-cycle theory.
Zhou Jintao believed: an ordinary person has only three chances in a lifetime to seize the Kondratieff dividend and leap to a higher class, at around ages 30, 40, and 50.
Take the post-85s generation as an example:
- First chance: 2019 (the structural bottom of the Kondratieff depression phase)
- Second chance: around 2030 (the starting point of the recovery phase of the sixth Kondratieff)
Core strategy:
- In the depression phase: save money, train your ability, wait for the bottom. Don’t thrash around; protect your principal.
- In the recovery/prosperity phase: go heavy on assets, dare to add leverage, seize the wind. Go ALL IN on the era’s dividend.
Zhou Jintao’s own investment practice verified this theory: he accurately turned bearish in 2015, and before his death in 2016 he left a final prophecy—“2019 is the post-85s’ first lifetime opportunity.”
Looking back, 2019 was indeed an important bottom for multiple assets—A-shares, US stocks, Bitcoin, and more.
Six: Practical Principles—Those Who Follow the Cycle Prosper
Based on the wave-cycle theory, we can distill a few principles for practice:
1. When the great cycle turns down, don’t fight the trend
In the recession and depression phases, don’t try to catch the bottom and don’t add leverage. Cash is king; surviving is victory.
2. When the great cycle turns up, don’t miss out
In the recovery and prosperity phases, dare to go heavy on quality assets. At this time the risk is missing out, not being trapped.
3. Asset rotation
- Spring: commodities, stocks, real estate
- Summer: stocks, real estate, commodities (a full bull market)
- Autumn: cash, gold, bonds (risk avoidance)
- Winter: cash, gold, wait for new signals
4. The cycle is human nature
Remember Buffett’s words: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” The essence of cyclical fluctuation is the cycle of group emotion. Staying optimistic in the depression phase and vigilant in the prosperity phase is counter to human nature, and it is also the source of excess returns.
Seven: A Letter to Us in 2025
Standing at the start of 2025, we may be at the tail end of the fifth Kondratieff depression, or still waiting in the cold winter.
But either way, understanding the cycle makes a few things clear to us:
- Don’t be anxious: If asset prices are depressed, that’s not your problem—it’s a matter of where the cycle stands.
- Stay patient: The depression phase will pass, and the sixth Kondratieff (AI + new energy) is gestating.
- Be prepared: Cash, knowledge, and health—these three are the hard currency that carries you through the cycle.
Zhou Jintao said: “The essence of the Kondratieff is the fluctuation of prices, and the accumulation of a lifetime’s wealth comes fundamentally from the investment or speculation in asset prices.”
Life’s wealth hinges on the Kondratieff wave.
To understand the cycle is to understand the flow of wealth; to follow the cycle is to follow the times of your life.
May we all, amid the wheel of the cycle, find our own rhythm.
